CWO Wrestling Team Sessions Start Thursday (1/2/20)

As we are all about to start a new year and a new decade, we are also gearing up to start the new season of the Columbus Wrestling Organization’s Wrestling Team.  This season is set to begin on Thursday, January 2nd with our Registration \ Open Mat night.  At the first practice session we will focus first on getting your child fully registered for the Team sessions and secondly providing a quick review of the basics the kids learned during the Clinic sessions followed by some live wrestling to get them excited for the new season.
To get registered for the CWO Wrestling Team, the options are as follows:

  1. If you have already paid the full $50 for both the Clinic and Team, your registration is complete and your wrestler will simply check in the first night of practice attended.
  2. If you paid the $10 for the Clinic and you want to continue with the Team, you do not need to re-register on-line, you will only need to pay the additional $40 fee for the Team sessions.  That can be done the first night your wrestler attends Team practices.  Your son or daughter will have their registration changed to full Team membership in our database by our staff.
  3. If you have not attended the Clinic and have not registered for the Team sessions, please do so on-line on our website (www.columbuswrestling.org) under the Registration tab.  The $50 fee will be due the first night your wrestler attends Team practices.  Please register using the “Team Only ($50) (Joining after Jan 1, 2020)” option.

If you are unable to attend the Registration / Open Mat night on Thursday, January 2nd, you can still register and pay for your wrestler as we start our normal practice sessions for Team on Monday, January 6th or the first night your child is able to attend.

As I discussed during the last few Clinic sessions, we had a GREAT group of wrestlers in both the PreK-2nd Grade session and the 3rd-8th Grade session.  The coaching staff was very happy with the eagerness of the wrestlers to learn technique and more importantly, the attention given to the coaches.  We are very excited and hopeful to see ALL of our Clinic participants back to become part of the Team!!!

Although it is not required, it is strongly recommended that if your child is continuing on with the CWO Wrestling Team, that your child has wrestling shoes for practice and competition.  As we advance in our technique and live wrestling, kids are disadvantaged by not having the traction and flexibility that wrestling shoes provide.  If you are unable to afford wrestling shoes, please send me an email and we will see if have a pair available for your use.  We have some sizes but not all available.  If anyone has an old pair of wrestling shoes that you would like to donate for use by others, please bring them to practice and give to the check in table staff.  Any donations would be greatly appreciated by everyone who benefits from being able to use them.

As we transition from the Clinic sessions into the Team sessions, we will be asking parents to not be in the wrestling room during practices as much as possible.  We ask this so we can have 100% of the wrestlers attention at all times during the practice sessions.  We only have your wrestlers for two practice sessions per week and we want to give them as much technique and live wrestling as possible at each session.  With the large amount of kids we have in our room at one time, we also need all the space we can get to spread the kids out and let us focus on them and not other distractions in the room.  As we are obviously in the winter cold and flu season, keeping only wrestlers in the room minimizes the exposure of our wrestlers, their parents and their siblings to colds, flu, etc. as well as keeping the noise levels manageable during practice.  Any parents who would like to help out on the mats during practice, please see me as we can always use additional volunteer coaches.  Hopefully your child is past the stage of being nervous or timid and will be okay without a parent in the room.  If not, we can make some exceptions by allowing some extra parents in the room.

If you have any concerns about whether or not your wrestler should continue, please feel free to contact me at 402-910-8749 and we can discuss it.  I truly feel that most, if not all, of the Clinic participants that we had this past December that were 4 years old or older are well prepared to take the next step and join the Team sessions.

To help our parents plan ahead, the CWO Wrestling Team calendar on our website has been updated with all of the practices for January through April.  Also, the calendar will be updated with all the tournaments we will be attending as a team as well as many other “opportunity” tournaments in the local area throughout the season.  (I am in the process of updating our calendar with tournament information as they get posted on other tournament calendar websites.  Our first “Team” tournament will be the Schuyler Youth Wrestling Tournament on Sunday, January 19th, 2020.)

Each Monday I will send out a weekly Information Note with all of our upcoming activities and upcoming tournaments.  Look for Information Note #1 on Monday, January 6th.

We are excited to start our next season of the CWO Wrestling Team and hope you will choose to join us.
